Opening Day Highlights
The fourth season of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League commenced on Saturday at the Lalit Ashok hotel in Bengaluru. The official launch of the event was preceded by an opening ceremony held a day earlier at Bengaluru Palace, a 19th-century Tudor-style landmark. The initial stage of the competition features a six-team double round-robin format, scheduled from September 5 to September 12. A total of 30 matches will be played, with four encounters daily for the first six days and three on each of the final two days. The match for third place and the final are set for Sunday, September 13.
On the opening day, two teams had a double schedule, with contrasting outcomes. The FYERS American Gambits emerged victorious in both their matches, taking an early lead in the standings. Conversely, the Triveni Continental Kings experienced two defeats.
The American Gambits began their campaign against the PBG Alaskan Knights. Javokhir Sindarov secured a win against former world champion Viswanathan Anand, and Marc’Andria Maurizzi defeated Abhimanyu Mishra. These two individual victories were sufficient for the Gambits to start with a win, as the remaining games in that match concluded in draws.
Team Performances and Key Matches
Later on the same day, the American Gambits also prevailed over the Continental Kings. Nihal Sarin, Daniil Dubov, and Marc’Andria Maurizzi contributed wins on boards two, three, and six, respectively. Alexandra Kosteniuk registered the only individual victory for the Kings on board five. Maurizzi concluded the opening day with two wins from his two games.
The Continental Kings had previously lost their first match against the Ganges Grandmasters. In that encounter, Levon Aronian, Polina Shuvalova, and Stavroula Tsolakidou all scored wins for the Grandmasters. This slow start for the Continental Kings is notable, given their past performance in the competition. They won the first two seasons of the Global Chess League and reached the final in 2025, where they were defeated by the reigning champions, Alpine SG Pipers, now known as Alpine APL Pipers.
The Alpine APL Pipers, the defending champions, also started their season with a victory. In their opening-day match against the CheQ Mumba Masters, Vidit Gujrathi and Humpy Koneru secured decisive wins. The Mumba Masters also recorded two individual wins by Pranesh M and Harika Dronavalli. However, due to the league’s innovative scoring system, which awards more points for wins with black pieces, the Pipers secured the match victory as they held the black pieces on all six boards.
In his first appearance for the Pipers, world number one Magnus Carlsen played against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Their game, featuring the Accelerated Dragon Sicilian, resulted in a 55-move draw despite Carlsen reaching a favorable rook endgame. Levon Aronian also had a strong performance, defeating Wei Yi after gaining an initiative and finding a breakthrough move. Wei Yi experienced a challenging day, losing both his games for the Continental Kings.
Player Insights and Future Outlook
Vidit Gujrathi, competing for the Alpine APL Pipers alongside Humpy Koneru, Divya Deshmukh, and Magnus Carlsen, participated in a corporate event on the sidelines of the Global Chess League. He, along with Carlsen and Koneru, played against 25 young players from Bengaluru and Chennai. Gujrathi emphasized the importance of building on the momentum of India’s recent chess success, stating that the new generation requires significant grooming and exposure through more tournaments in India.
The initial results from the opening day saw the Alaskan Knights lose to the American Gambits. The Continental Kings also lost to the Ganges Grandmasters. Additionally, the Mumba Masters were defeated by the APL Pipers, and the American Gambits secured another win against the Continental Kings. The competition continues with matches scheduled through September 12.
