India qualify for AFC U20 Asian Cup after 20-year wait
India secure qualification with dominant win
India have successfully qualified for the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027, marking their return to the tournament after a 20-year absence. The qualification was sealed with a decisive 3-0 victory over Bangladesh in their final Group B qualifier. The match took place at the Do’stlik Stadium in Tashkent on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
The Blue Colts displayed a strong performance, with goals coming from Danny Meitei Laishram, Vishal Yadav, and substitute Md Arbash. This crucial win propelled India to second place in their group standings, securing their spot as one of the best runners-up across the qualification groups.
The opening goal arrived in the 25th minute following a well-executed pressing and attacking sequence. Danny Meitei Laishram capitalised on a defensive error from Bangladesh’s Md Abdul Riyad Fahim, who conceded possession to Hateem Ali. Ali then set up an unmarked Danny inside the penalty area, who calmly finished to give India the lead in the important fixture.
Following the first goal, India gained momentum and began to control the pace of the game. They maintained possession and patiently sought opportunities to extend their lead. Danny Meitei Laishram nearly scored a second in the 34th minute with a looping free-kick, but Bangladesh goalkeeper Raj Chowdhury made a save to keep his team in the contest.
Second-half surge seals victory
India continued their offensive pressure into the second half, consistently challenging the Bangladesh defence. The team’s persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Vishal Yadav scored the second goal. A long throw into the penalty area was flicked on by Rishikanta towards Vishal, who then produced an acrobatic finish that beat Chowdhury and surprised the Bangladesh defence.

Despite falling two goals behind, Bangladesh attempted to mount a comeback, increasing their aggression. However, India’s defence remained well-organised, absorbing the pressure and preventing their opponents from finding a way back into the match.
India’s head coach, Mahesh Gawali, made strategic substitutions in the 72nd minute, bringing on Md Arbash and Prashan Jajo to replace Danny Meitei Laishram and Vishal Yadav. These changes quickly yielded results. Just seven minutes later, Md Arbash secured the victory with India’s third goal.
The third goal originated from a move initiated by Yaipharemba Chingakham. India then executed a series of passes to break down the Bangladesh defence, culminating in Arbash’s powerful left-footed strike into the top of the net, making the score 3-0.
In the closing stages of the match, Gawali introduced further fresh players, including Aniket Yadav, Omang Dodum, and Daniyal Makakmayum. India comfortably managed the remainder of the game, securing their qualification.
Tournament outlook and team performance
The victory gave India a total of six points from their three group matches, placing them second in the final Group B standings. Uzbekistan secured the top spot in the group with nine points after defeating Syria. Syria finished third with three points, while Bangladesh ended up at the bottom of the group, losing all three of their games and being relegated to the Development Phase.
India’s qualification as one of the seven best runners-up across all eight groups highlights their strong performance in the qualifiers. The AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 is scheduled to be held from March 24 to April 10, 2027. The top four teams from this Asian Cup will earn qualification for the FIFA U20 World Cup 2027.
