India qualifies for AFC U20 Asian Cup after 20-year wait
India has secured a spot in the AFC U20 Asian Cup main tournament, marking their first qualification in 20 years. This achievement followed a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh in their final qualifying match on Sunday.
The team, led by head coach Mahesh Gawali, earned six points from three matches in the qualifiers. Their qualification was confirmed after Uzbekistan defeated Syria 3-0 in a later Group B match, allowing India to finish second in the group as one of the best runners-up teams.
A decisive victory and a tense wait
The match against Bangladesh saw Danny Meitei Laishram open the scoring for India in the 25th minute. Vishal Yadav then extended India’s lead with an acrobatic finish around the 60-minute mark. Substitute Md Arbash sealed the 3-0 victory with a powerful strike in the 79th minute.
The game began evenly, with neither side dominating the initial exchanges. Danny’s goal came after coordinated pressing, forcing a Bangladesh defender to concede possession. Danny then received the ball inside the penalty area and calmly finished to put India ahead.
Following the first goal, the Blue Colts, as the team is known, began to control the tempo, maintaining possession and looking for another scoring opportunity. Danny nearly scored again in the 34th minute with a looping free-kick, but the Bangladesh goalkeeper made the save.
India continued their strong performance in the second half, keeping Bangladesh under pressure. The second goal resulted from a long throw into the penalty area, flicked on to Vishal, who executed an acrobatic finish. Despite Bangladesh’s attempts to counter, India’s defense remained organized.
Coach Gawali introduced Md Arbash and Prashan Jajo in the 72nd minute, replacing Danny and Vishal. This substitution quickly paid off when Arbash completed a series of passes with a powerful left-footed strike, securing the 3-0 lead. Further changes were made in the closing stages, with Aniket Yadav, Omang Dodum, and Daniyal Makakmayum entering the game as India comfortably saw out the match.
Coach Gawali’s leadership and team preparation
Mahesh Gawali, a former defender for India, is known for his disciplined approach. His coaching philosophy emphasizes discipline, concentration, and attitude. After the victory against Bangladesh, Gawali and his staff remained at the stadium to watch the crucial Uzbekistan versus Syria match. He chose to sit in the general stands, observing the game with intense focus.
When Uzbekistan’s 3-0 win confirmed India’s qualification, the tension lifted. Gawali shared a brief prayer with his staff before being congratulated by the Syrian staff and exchanging pleasantries with Uzbekistan head coach Jamoliddin Rakhmatullaev.
Upon returning to the hotel, Gawali was met by waiting players who had watched the decisive match via streaming. The team celebrated by waving the tricolour and tossing their coach into the air, with assistant coach MG Ramachandran and goalkeeping coach Parshuram Salwadi also joining the festivities. Even some Uzbek hotel staff participated in the celebration, and after the revelry, the players helped clean up the area.
Gawali expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, noting the 20-year wait for qualification. He acknowledged the hard work of both the players and the coaching staff, as well as the support from the AIFF. He also highlighted the team’s playing style and the moments they created on the field.
The foundation for this success was laid during the team’s preparation in Bengaluru, despite a 0-4 defeat to Uzbekistan earlier in the qualifiers. Gawali pointed to the four friendly matches against Singapore and Yemen, which included three wins and one draw, as key moments that built the players’ belief and confidence. In the five weeks leading up to qualification, the Blue Colts played seven games and achieved six clean sheets.
The AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 is scheduled to take place from March 24 to April 10. Gawali stressed the importance of continued preparation for the upcoming tournament, which he anticipates will be a bigger and tougher experience for the team.
