R Praggnanandhaa has secured a spot in the finals of the Grand Chess Tour’s final leg after a 19-9 victory over Vincent Keymer of Germany. This win followed a strong performance by the Indian Grandmaster, who had established a significant lead earlier in the competition.

Praggnanandhaa had already gained a six-point advantage after winning the second classical game. This lead proved crucial as the tournament progressed into its final day, which featured games of shorter duration.

Path to the finals

On the final day of play, Praggnanandhaa continued his strong form by defeating Keymer in two consecutive rapid encounters. These victories nearly confirmed his place in the finals, giving him an unassailable 17-3 lead. He then further extended his points tally to 19 with another win in the first blitz game.

The format of the tournament, which awards points for different game types, allowed Praggnanandhaa to build a substantial lead. A rapid win, for instance, is worth four points, contributing significantly to the overall score.

Praggnanandhaa will now face Fabiano Caruana of the USA in the event finale. Caruana is the pre-event favourite and the defending champion, setting the stage for a challenging final match.

Caruana’s lead in the title match

In a separate development within the Grand Chess Tour Finals, Fabiano Caruana took an early lead in his title match against Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu. Caruana secured six points by winning the opening classical game on Tuesday.

During this game, Praggnanandhaa, playing with the black pieces, emerged from a strategically complex Italian Opening in a balanced position. Caruana, with a bishop against a knight in the middlegame, did not initially hold a substantial advantage.

The turning point in their classical game occurred on move 28. Praggnanandhaa had an opportunity to guide the game towards a draw but instead made a tactical error with 28…Rc8?, which resulted in the immediate loss of a pawn. Caruana capitalised on this mistake and converted his advantage without allowing his opponent to recover.

Despite Caruana’s six-point lead from this classical game, the scoring system of the tournament allows for potential comebacks. Praggnanandhaa does not necessarily need to force the issue immediately in Wednesday’s second classical game, as rapid wins offer significant points.

Caruana is aiming to retain his GCT Finals title, while Praggnanandhaa is seeking his first triumph in the event. The second classical game was scheduled for Wednesday, with the rapid and blitz sections set to conclude the match on Thursday.

Third-place match developments

In the third-place match, Vincent Keymer and Wesley So shared the six available points after their first classical game concluded in a draw. The match featured a complicated London System opening.

The game between Keymer and So developed in an unusual manner, with neither player castling at any point. The middlegame presented several sharp possibilities, including a potential 20.g6 break, which could have led to significant complications involving an exchange sacrifice.

Keymer opted for 20.Qb6, which was followed by 20…Nd6 and 21.Bxf5 Nxf5. The queens were traded four moves later, resulting in a balanced and simplified position. An alternative, sharper move for the German GM would have been 20.g6!?, which, after 20…Bxg6, would have led to 21.Rxg6 fxg6 22.Bxe4 dxe4 23.Ne5, offering strong compensation for the exchange.

The players chose a quieter path, which ultimately led to a rook ending where neither side could make meaningful progress, prompting them to agree to a draw. All four players involved in the finals still have two days of play remaining after a demanding month of elite competition in Saint Louis.

The stakes remain high as the Grand Chess Tour season approaches its conclusion. The top three finishers in the overall event will automatically qualify for next year’s Grand Chess Tour.
