BCCI aims to nurture Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for long-term success
BCCI’s Strategy for Sooryavanshi’s Career
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is implementing a careful strategy to manage the career progression of 15-year-old batting talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The board’s primary objective is to ensure that his early achievements translate into a sustained and distinguished international career, preventing him from becoming a short-term sensation. This approach was outlined by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia following a Team India performance review meeting in Mumbai.
Saikia indicated that Sooryavanshi is under close observation, with the board intending to guide him in a manner similar to cricketing legends like Sachin Tendulkar. The goal is for Sooryavanshi, and other players of his caliber, to achieve a long and impactful career for the country. The BCCI is meticulously monitoring every step he takes in his international journey.
The emphasis is on fostering longevity rather than focusing solely on immediate success. Saikia stressed the importance of ensuring that every move Sooryavanshi makes is a correct one, to avoid the pitfall of being a “one-series or one-year wonder.” This careful management reflects the high expectations surrounding the young cricketer.
The review meeting where these plans were discussed included significant figures such as Saikia, India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman, alongside other senior officials.
Sooryavanshi’s Rapid Ascent in Cricket
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has quickly risen through the ranks, making a significant impact across various levels of cricket. He recently became the youngest player to achieve a half-century in the history of the Duleep Trophy, reaching this milestone at 15 years and 157 days. This accomplishment broke a record that had stood for 57 years.
His performance in the Duleep Trophy included a notable 92 runs off 81 balls in the first innings of the semifinal against Central Zone, where he also contributed 40 runs in the final innings. These contributions helped East Zone secure a four-wicket victory and advance to the final. Former India opener Kris Srikkanth has expressed strong support for Sooryavanshi, highlighting his fearless batting and potential across all three formats of the game.
Srikkanth, speaking on his YouTube channel, praised Sooryavanshi’s outstanding play and suggested that with proper guidance, he could become a superstar. He noted that Sooryavanshi’s presence has drawn significant attention to the Duleep Trophy. Srikkanth believes the young player has the capability to excel at every level of cricket and is poised to dominate world cricket in all formats.
Sooryavanshi’s international debut came in the T20I series against England, making him India’s youngest male international debutant. This followed an impressive IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals, where he amassed 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30. During this season, he scored one century and five fifties, finishing as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with a record 72 sixes.

His success extends to age-group cricket as well. Sooryavanshi was a standout performer at the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, where he scored 439 runs and earned the Player of the Tournament award. More recently, he scored 151 runs in three matches against Zimbabwe, earning his maiden Player of the Series award as India completed a 3-0 series sweep.
The rapid progression of Sooryavanshi across age-group, franchise, domestic, and international cricket has reinforced the belief that he could emerge as one of India’s prominent batting stars in the coming years. The BCCI’s careful planning aims to ensure this trajectory leads to a sustained and legendary career.
