Barcelona vs. Feyenoord: UEFA Champions League Match Preview
Barcelona is set to begin its UEFA Champions League campaign at home against Feyenoord. This match marks the first of eight league phase fixtures for Barcelona in the competition. The Spanish side has started its domestic league season strongly, winning its initial four matches and scoring 17 goals, including a 5-0 victory against Valencia recently.
The upcoming fixture will be only the second competitive meeting between the two clubs. Their previous encounter was in the last 16 of the 1974-75 European Cup. Barcelona advanced in that tie with a 3-0 aggregate score, following a 0-0 draw away and a 3-0 home win at Camp Nou, with all three goals credited to Carles Rexach.
Historically, no Dutch team has secured an away victory against Barcelona in European competitions, with Barcelona drawing three and winning seven of these ten previous matches. Barcelona has also maintained an average of 3.1 goals per game across these fixtures, totaling 31 goals.
Team Form and Player Focus
Barcelona will be playing its opening European Cup/UEFA Champions League game at home for the 21st time. The team has won 18 of its previous 20 such matches, drawing one and losing one. Their sole defeat in an opening home game came against Bayern Munich in the 2021-22 season, ending 0-3.
Feyenoord, the trophy winners and last season’s runners-up in the Dutch championship, enters the match having been spared qualification rounds due to the Netherlands receiving two direct berths in this year’s Champions League. In their domestic league, they currently hold third position after five games, having won all three of their away fixtures. However, they recorded 2-2 home draws against both Go Ahead Eagles and ADO Den Haag. Feyenoord remains unbeaten across all competitions in 19 matches, a streak that began in March.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who played 105 games for Barcelona between 2003 and 2007, returns to Catalonia as Feyenoord’s manager. This will be his third season managing in the UEFA Champions League, having previously managed Feyenoord in 2017-18 and Rangers in 2022-23. He has lost 11 of his previous 12 matches in the competition.
Barcelona is currently experiencing its longest run without a clean sheet in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, spanning 15 games. Their last clean sheet in the competition was against Borussia Dortmund, a 4-0 victory, and they have conceded 30 goals in 15 matches since then.
Among managers with at least ten games in the UEFA Champions League, Hansi Flick has the highest win percentage at 72.7% and the highest goals per game ratio. Since he took over at Barcelona in 2024, the Catalan side has scored a high number of goals per game in the competition.
Raphinha has been significantly involved in goals in the UEFA Champions League since the start of the 2024-25 campaign, with 16 goals and 10 assists. He is the only player to achieve at least ten goals and ten assists in this period. Only Harry Kane, with 29, has been directly involved in more goals.
Rodri of Barcelona has been on the losing side in only eight of his 62 career games in the UEFA Champions League, with 41 wins and 13 draws. His loss percentage of 12.9% is among midfielders with a significant number of appearances in the competition.
Player Availability and Potential Debuts
For Barcelona, Frenkie de Jong is unavailable due to injury, and Roony Bardghji is also out. Eric García will serve a suspension following a red card in last season’s quarter-final match against Atlético Madrid. Reports suggest that Jules Koundé may start at right-back in place of Eric García.
Several Barcelona players, including Rodri, Karim Adeyemi, Gabriel Jesus, and Anthony Gordon, have previous Champions League experience with other clubs, but this will be their first continental fixture in a Barcelona jersey. Xavi Espart, who has featured in every league game this season, could make his first European start.
For Feyenoord, 19-year-old Shaqueel van Persie could make his UEFA Champions League debut, following in the footsteps of his father, Robin van Persie, who also debuted in the competition at 19 for the Dutch side in October 2002 against Dynamo Kyiv. Feyenoord is reportedly missing several players due to injury, including Thomas Beelen, Bart Nieuwkoop, Gjis Smal, Jakub Moder, and Jordan Bos, which could impact their defense.
The expected lineup for Barcelona includes Joan García in goal, with a defense of Koundé, Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín, and Espart. The midfield is expected to feature Pedri, Rodri, and Fermín López. The attacking trio is anticipated to be Lamine Yamal, Gordon, and Raphinha. Lamine Yamal has scored four goals in his last two matches, while Raphinha is the league’s top scorer with six goals in four matches, and Anthony Gordon has five assists.
The match is scheduled for an earlier-than-normal kick-off at 6:45 PM CEST.

After this match, Barcelona is scheduled to play against Galatasaray, Paris Saint-Germain, Aston Villa, Sabah, Manchester City, Sporting CP, and Como.
